‘I want to get to Seán’s room,’ he said.

‘You can’t get to Seán’s room. Where is Seán and how do you want to get to his room?’

He produced a pistol and pointed it at her.

‘He sent me here and told me to go to his room and get the ammunition there. He gave me his key and said I must get in somehow if you were out.’

He produced the key and Teasie tried it in the door.

‘Well, you’ll get nothing if you go to his room. You’d better come in and wait till Mrs Heuston comes back. She won’t be long.’

He came in.

‘Where is Seán?’

‘Don’t you know we’re fighting the soldiers?’

‘What? Are you mad? A handful like you to be fighting the soldiers.’

‘We’re alright. We’re expecting the Germans; there’ll be 50,000 here by Saturday, or Monday at latest.’

‘And where is Seán now?’

‘Seán brought us into the Mendicity Institute today at twelve o’clock. We’re quite safe; we’re in the best place.’

She gave him Jack’s dinner.

‘That’s grand,’ said he. He showed her his Fianna uniform under the overcoat.

‘If they see this, I’ll be shot.’

Mother came in and gave him the ammunition, stuffing it into his pockets.

‘Now I have to climb back over the wall into the Mendicity, and I may be shot doing so. I had to shoot a soldier in the lane behind it when coming out. Then a lot of soldiers’ wives and people followed me. I led them up a lane and turned round to them took out my pistol and pointed it at them. “Now,” I said, “it’s your life or mine.” A girl fainted and I left them there.’ Teasie gave him a Sacred Heart badge as he had not one, and he went off. His name was McLoughlin. He got back alright, for mother afterwards got the latchkey with Jack’s things.197
